Chapter 14 

The bullet comments almost stopped for a few seconds. 

Bernadette looked at Jessica’s face, which instantly lost all color. She held the blood bag in front of the camera and turned it around carefully a few times. “See it clearly? The pregnancy was fake.” 

“Just bribed someone to make a certificate and fooled you guys and Nolan so easily. Use your brain. If you have time to go online, better spend some time downloading the national anti–fraud app.” 

“Sometimes I really thought you should be an actor.” After saying that, she looked at Jessica: “Just watch less cheesy dramas, this whole framing someone for a miscarriage thing is way too fake. Want me to call you an ambulance?”

Jessica’s face suddenly looked like a spilled paint palette, all pale and green. She bit her lip hard, got up fast, and ran away in a panic, even leaving her phone behind.

Bernadette gave her a cold look as she walked away, glanced at the noisy livestream, and closed it without hesitation. 

I got held up on the way, so I was a bit late when I got to the café. 

Rushed to the café, and Declan’s coffee was already half gone. He was just bored, scrolling on his phone. 

Bernadette sat down across from me: “Sorry, I got held up on the way.” 

Declan looked up, his face full of smiles: “Didn’t expect you to be so tough sometimes.”

Bernadette was stunned for a moment, then saw him put his phone on the table. The screen was showing a recording of the livestream from earlier. In just a few minutes, it was in trending topic again, and the trending topic was called “Bernadette’s Hidden Detective.” 

Bernadette didn’t know whether to laugh or cry: “To deal with bad guys, you gotta be even worse than them. But have I been in the spotlight too much lately…” 

In just a few days, she went from plagiarist–cheated on–cheater–violent maniac–cheated on again–to detective. The internet changed so fast, she was already struggling to keep up. 

“Now, everything is clear.” Declan looked at her in silence and smiled, “I was thinking of helping you, but I didn’t expect you to be so good. You didn’t need my help at all. Feels a bit frustrating.” 

When he wasn’t working, that sharp look in his eyes softened in an instant, turning into a warm spring breeze. The corners of his thin lips lifted, and the ends of his peach blossom eyes tilted up a little. He really had a charming and elegant vibe.

Bernadette claimed she wasn’t into looks, but deep down she was secretly amazed for a moment. 

No wonder people all said Declan had so many admirers outside, and every one of them was willing. Even without his status, just his face alone could make tons of people fall for him, not to mention the way he talked- how reliable he was when serious, and how gentle and funny he was in daily life. The only way Bernadette could describe him was–born lover. 

Bernadette couldn’t help but think of Nolan again. He looked pretty upright, but what he did wasn’t even as decent as what Declan did. 

At least Declan never lied to those lovers.

Declan looked at her and said quietly, “I just feel like you’re thinking something bad about me.” 

Bernadette gave a nervous laugh and said, “How could that be?” 

“Alright, I believe you.” Declan didn’t push any further and just handed her the menu. “Company management is a boring topic, and we’ll be talking about it for a while. Want something to drink?”

Bernadette casually ordered an Americano, then looked at Declan: “But I guess that’s not the only thing you came to ask about today.” 

Declan paused and didn’t hide it: “Alright, I did come here today for something else. It’s about the project between the Mallins Group and the Crowley Group. I wanted to know, what’s the reason for not announcing the specific team yet?”
