Chapter 10
Her laughter took on a wild, vicious edge as she raised the blade.
“Don’t lie. If you hadn’t tattled, Jonathan wouldn’t know I ruined your family. You exaggerated, didn’t you? Admit it–I just can’t stand to see you happy!”
She slashed, the knife grazing my skin. Then she raised it high, aiming straight for my chest.
I braced for pain–but it never came.
When I opened my eyes, Jonathan stood before me, the knife buried in his back.
With a snarl, he wrenched it free and leveled it at Tiffany’s throat.
“I told you never to touch Emily. Do you not understand?!”
“Do you believe I won’t end you right here?”
Tiffany trembled, tears glistening. “Punish me if you must, but would you really let me get hurt? That woman’s beneath you. I’m the one you love!”
Jonathan’s eyes turned savage.
“Shut your mouth. Say another word and I’ll cut your tongue out.”
He spun back to me, voice urgent, panicked.
“Emily, don’t believe her! I never loved her. She was just a distraction, nothing more. When I found out she set the fire, I called the police immediately. I swear I didn’t know she followed me here. You have to believe
me!”
I stared at him, exhausted beyond patience.
“How many times must I say it? I don’t care.”
“Keep your mistress under control. Don’t let her interfere with my mission again.”
Seeing my fury, Daniel rushed over and threw his jacket over my shoulders. “Ignore them. Let’s go back.”
Jonathan threw the knife aside, his composure completely unraveling.
“Emily, who is he? Don’t forget–you’re still my wife!”
“I owe you no explanation. Our divorce is inevitable. Get out of my way.”
Rage burst across Jonathan’s face. He struck Daniel to the ground.
“Touch my wife and you’re dead!”
I slapped him across the face. The sound cracked like a whip.
He froze, stunned. For years, no matter what he did, I had never raised a hand to him.
Now I had. For another man.

“Jonathan, you won’t be my husband much longer.”
As I turned, Tiffany lunged from the blind side, knife flashing.
Jonathan didn’t hesitate. He stepped in front of me.
The blade pierced his heart.
Blood gushed, hot and dark. His body crumpled to the ground, mouth opening soundlessly.
Tiffany dropped the knife, horrified. “It wasn’t me–I didn’t-”
She never saw the police arrive, called secretly by Daniel. Officers seized her, shoving her to the ground.
Paramedics rushed Jonathan onto a stretcher. Pale, sweating, he still clutched my hand, voice quivering.
“Emily… you have to believe me. I only ever loved you.”
His hand shook violently, desperate.
But I pushed him away.
The ambulance doors slammed shut, cutting his face from my sight.
I knew, deep down, this was likely the last time I would ever see Jonathan.
And what he clled love dissipated like dust carried away on the evening breeze.
