His hands trembled violently as he took the ring. On the inside of the band were the letters he had carved himself: Forever Love, E.C.

It symbolized his vow–that he would only ever love Emily.

But now the ring was scorched black. And its owner… unknown.

“No… impossible! Did you even look properly? How could you lose an entire living person?!”

“I’ll go myself!”

He shoved on his shoes and stumbled out without even a coat.

But when he reached the psychiatric hospital, it was nothing but smoldering ruins.

Emily’s phone remained dead. No messages, no reply.

Everything pointed to the same truth: Emily Carter had perished in the fire.

“No.” Jonathan shook his head violently.

“Emily, you promised to stay with me forever. We were supposed to have a child–how can our family be

broken?”

His eyes burned red as he stared at the rubble. His chest ached as if crushed under a mountain.

A firefighter stepped forward gently. “We can’t be certain, sir, but… you should prepare yourself.”

“There is no preparing!” Jonathan bellowed, his voice cracking.

He summoned his private guards, sending them to dig through every inch of the ruins.

For a full day and night, they searched. Finally, one guard returned with empty hands.

“Mr. Miller… nothing.”

Jonathan clutched the ring against his heart, breath ragged, pain devouring him.

How could she have disappeared the second he took his eyes off her?

Maybe Emily hadn’t died–maybe she was simply angry, hiding from him.

Yes. That had to be it.

If she was hiding, he could coax her back. After all, Emily was so understanding. So compliant.

He sat by the ruins until midnight, finally dragging himself home.

But as he stepped inside, Tiffany’s shrill laughter carried through the halls.

“Can you believe it? I only pulled the switch in the control room, and the whole hospital went up in flames!”

“It was exhilarating!”

“By now, Emily and her crazy father must be dead. I’ll finally be Mrs. Miller! Hurry and congratulate me, ha

ha ha-”

Her laugh cut off as she noticed the tall shadow behind her.

Jonathan’s face was carved in ice.

“J–Jonathan… you didn’t hear, did you?”

But he had heard every word.

“You don’t understand, I was just playing around–you know how mischievous I am-”

Her excuses choked off as his hand clamped around her throat.

“Mischievous? Emily’s life is hanging by a thread, and you dare brag about it?”

“Tiffany, have I spoiled you too much?”

His grip tightened until she couldn’t breathe.

“You… you’ll kill me? But aren’t I the one you love most? Why… why would you treat me like this?”

Her disbelief was plain.

The man who once whispered sweetly in her ear–now he was the one strangling her.

“Why?” Jonathan’s voice was low and deadly.

“Because you’re nothing but a distraction. What makes you think you ever compare to Emily?”

Her eyes widened. The strength drained from her limbs.

A mere distraction.

For years, he had sheltered her, defended her in public, praised her as pure and untouchable.

And yet now, for the first time, he spoke the truth.
