Chapter 1

Evelyn Caldwell traveled back in time to the very day her parents presented her with the profiles of heirs from Crestwood’s three most powerful families and asked her to choose one for a marriage alliance.

Without hesitation, she shook her head. “I won’t choose any of them.”

Her parents, Atticus Caldwell and Catherine Caldwell, were stunned. “Why?”

“Because…” Her heart ached. In her past life, she had married all three of them.

Everyone in their circle knew that the Harrington Family, the Montgomery Family, the Whitmore Family, and the Caldwell Family were the four great aristocratic houses standing at the pinnacle of Crestwood.

And Evelyn–she was the only heiress among the four. Naturally, the other three families all sought an alliance with the Caldwells

through marriage.

In her past life, when first faced with this choice, she had selected Sebastian Harrington, believing with all her heart that she would live happily ever after.

But after their wedding, he spent 364 days a year away from home–not only making her the laughingstock of high society, but later dying in a multi–car pileup–while protecting Daphne Holloway.

Evelyn, widowed at a young age, endured three years of solitude before her family arranged for her to remarry, this time to Julian

Montgomery.

Yet he, too, treated their marriage as a mere formality–as if she were invisible. In the second year of their marriage, he lost his life in a

deadly street race—again, for Daphne’s sake.

After that, people called Evelyn a “black widow.” It wasn’t until she turned thirty that she married again, this time to Nathaniel

Whitmore.

This time, they treated each other with mutual respect, living a stable life until old age. But on his deathbed, Nathaniel grasped her hand and left her with one final wish, “Evelyn, if there’s a next life… don’t choose me for the marriage alliance. I only ever wanted to be

with Daphne.”

It was then that Evelyn realized–they had all loved Daphne.

That was why their dying words had been identical–Don’t choose me.

And Daphne? She was merely the daughter of the Caldwell family’s butler–plain–looking, unremarkable in every way, with no particular talents except a penchant for acting coy and playing the damsel in distress.

What did Daphne have that she didn’t? Evelyn agonized over this unanswered question. Those men had willingly shackled themselves in joyless unions–all to spare Daphne even a moment of their families‘ disdain.

Evelyn had spent an entire lifetime witnessing their undying devotion to Daphne. And in that lifetime, she had learned one truth–She,

Evelyn Caldwell, was nobody’s supporting character.

Those who didn’t love her–she would no longer chase after them.

So in this life, she chose none of them. Instead, she gave her parents a new answer. “If I must marry for an alliance, then I choose Liam Sinclair of the Sinclair Family.”

At that name, her parents‘ expressions shifted to disbelief. “Liam? That illegitimate son of the Sinclairs from Silverpine? Why on earth would you suddenly want to marry him?”

Because in her past life, Liam had eventually risen to become the world’s wealthiest man, topping the Forbes list–a titan of industry who commanded immense power and influence.

If marriage was to be a transaction for the family’s benefit, then Evelyn would maximize its returns.

Liam was, without a doubt, the most advantageous choice.

As for love… she no longer held any illusions about that.

Though her parents objected, Evelyn painstakingly laid out every possible justification. “Silverpine’s economy is booming, and the Sinclair Group is the foremost dynasty there. Haven’t you always wanted to expand into Silverpine but lacked the foothold? My marriage would be the perfect opportunity. And as for Liam–didn’t you once say he was ambitious, with a ruthless, visionary edge? That he was destined for greatness?”

By the time she finished, her parents were convinced.

After careful deliberation, they ultimately agreed to respect her decision and reached out to the Sinclair Family to finalize the arrangement. “Evelyn, the two families have settled everything. The wedding will take place in fifteen days.”

Hearing this, Evelyn finally felt at ease.

With so little time, her parents hurried off to prepare her dowry, leaving her alone on the sofa, lost in thought.

Before long, footsteps echoed at the door.

Sebastian, Julian, and Nathaniel strode in, their gazes locking onto her in unison.

“Evelyn, who did you choose for the marriage alliance?”

Their voices overlapped, their expressions tense and grave. For a moment, Evelyn was dazed.

The four of them had grown up together, inseparable since childhood.

Her three “older brothers” had always treated her like a princess–spoiling her, indulging her, protecting her.

Whatever she wanted, they gave her. If she was upset, they took turns comforting her. If anyone dared slight her, they rushed to her

defense.

But now she understood–all that doting had merely been the affection of an older brother for his little sister.

In her past life, Evelyn had mistaken their urgency for eagerness.

Now she knew the truth–they hadn’t wanted to be chosen. That was why they looked so uneasy.

The realization sent a pang through her chest, so sharp it stole her breath.

After a long silence, she finally steadied herself and answered hoarsely, “In fifteen days, you’ll find out.”

Seeing her evasion, the three men grew restless, pressing for a clearer answer.

But before they could say more, Evelyn’s phone rang. “Miss Caldwell, Daphne was in an accident–she’s badly hurt and in the emergency room! But the hospital has no available beds… Please, can you help save my daughter?”

The tearful voice of the butler, Mr. Holloway, crackled through the speaker. Before Evelyn could respond, Sebastian snatched the phone from her hand, his voice thick with concern. “Which hospital?”

A brief pause. Then, between sobs, Mr. Holloway gave the name.

Sebastian hung up and turned to leave without another glance. “Evelyn, don’t bother with the hospital. I’ll handle it.”

Julian and Nathaniel, as if on cue, immediately followed.

“That hospital is under the Montgomery Family’s name. I’ll speak to the director–you stay here and rest.”

“I know a few top specialists. I’ll reach out to them. No need for you to worry, Evelyn.”

They framed it as consideration for her, but in truth–they were just seizing the chance to see Daphne.

How obvious their affection was. How had she missed it in her past life?

Watching their retreating figures, Evelyn let out a bitter laugh.

With a heavy heart, she turned and retreated to her bedroom, gathering every memento tied to them.

By the time she finished, night had fallen. When she opened her phone, she saw Daphne’s latest social media post, “Another day of being pampered by three young heirs.”

The attached photo showed Daphne in a VIP hospital room, sipping from a bowl of Nathaniel’s signature nourishing soup, Sebastian’s wristwatch on the table beside her, Julian’s coat draped over a chair.

Evelyn tapped Like, then stared for a long time at the three boxes she had just packed.

Inside were the gifts she’d received on her eighteenth birthday–heirlooms from the Harrington, Montgomery, and Whitmore Families.

The one she chose to keep would determine which family the Caldwells allied with through marriage.

Now that her own marriage was settled, it was time to return them.

She called for a courier and handed the boxes over. “Please deliver these to their respective addresses–exactly fifteen days from today.”
