Chapter 10
After settling the Holloways into their new home, the three men returned to their respective residences.
Early the next morning, just as they were preparing to visit Daphne in the hospital, each received a package–Evelyn had returned their family heirlooms.
Sebastian stared at the imperial green jade bracelet in the box.
She didn’t choose me.
Why? Hadn’t Evelyn always loved him
the most?
As a child, she’d trailed after him, sweetly calling him “Sebastian!” promising to marry him when she grew up. Had she chosen Julian or Nathaniel instead?
The same scene played out in the other two households.
Julian and Nathaniel clutched their returned heirlooms, a sour taste rising in their throats.
What essential element did the others contain that they themselves were missing?
As if sharing one mind, they rushed to each other’s homes, only to find no one there. Finally, they regrouped in their usual private dining room, arranged via their group chat.
When Julian arrived, Sebastian was already seated, his family’s bracelet on the table. Both assumed Evelyn must have chosen
Nathaniel.
An uneasy silence stretched between them.
Then Nathaniel walked in, baffled by the intensity of their stares. Without preamble, he placed his ancestral jade pendant on the table. “Evelyn returned this. Which one of you did she pick?”
The other two froze.
In disbelief, they pulled out their own returned treasures.
“She sent mine back too.”
“And mine.”
The silence this time was deafening.
Nathaniel was the first to break it. “If not us… then who?”
“Who else in Crestwood’s elite is worthy of Evelyn?” Julian muttered, more to convince himself than the others. “Maybe she’s just throwing a tantrum, waiting for us to beg her back.”
“Right, that must be it.”
“Absolutely.”
Their voices overlapped, the excuses growing louder, more desperate-
Until a ringing phone cut through the noise.
Sebastian glanced at the caller ID: Daphne. For some reason, he hesitated.
The call went unanswered. Then Julian’s phone buzzed, then Nathaniel’s–all ignored.
When Sebastian’s phone rang again, Julian and Nathaniel exhaled. “Just answer. What if it’s important?”
With a sigh, Sebastian picked up, switching to speakerphone. “Daphne. What is it?”
“Are Julian and Nathaniel with you?”

“Yes. You’re on speaker.”
Daphne’s voice sparkled with excitement. “Oh, I’m so touched! You stood up to your families for me, refused the marriage alliance with Evelyn-”
The three men exchanged bewildered glances. They’d never outright refused the engagement. Something was off.
“Daphne,” Sebastian interrupted, “what are you talking about?”
A pause. Then, confused but still bright, “Didn’t you all reject the alliance? That’s why Evelyn had to marry that… that illegitimate son from the Silverpine Sinclairs!”
“WHAT?!” The word exploded from all three simultaneously.
Evelyn–married into the Sinclair Family? When? How?
As heirs, they knew the Sinclairs‘ reputation. Liam was undeniably capable–but he was a bastard. The one thing blue–blooded heirs despised more than anything.
How could Evelyn degrade herself like this? Just to spite them?
