Chapter 11
They immediately pulled out their phones to search for the news.
Headlines from various gossip accounts flooded their screens-
–
“After rising to power, the illegitimate son of the Sinclair Family wins the favor of a young lady from the Caldwell Family, one of Crestwood’s four great elite families–further solidifying his status.”
“Why would an elite heiress choose an illegitimate son?”
No matter how much they didn’t want to believe it, they couldn’t deny the truth: Evelyn was marrying someone else.
“Sebastian? Julian? Nathaniel? Are you still there?” Daphne’s voice called out to them through the phone, but the three were too
stunned to respond.
Sebastian abruptly hung up and dialed his assistant. “Book me the earliest flight to Silverpine.”
“Us too. We’re going to bring Evelyn back. She can’t just marry some random guy out of spite!” Julian agreed immediately.
When the assistant informed them that all flights to Silverpine were fully booked, they immediately mobilized their families‘ resources to arrange a private jet.
After the call, the three stood in silence.
Daphne’s calls kept coming, but none of them were in the mood to answer. Without a word, they turned off their phones.
Back in the hospital, Daphne stared at her phone in disbelief. The cheerful mood she had been in moments ago evaporated, replaced by
seething fury.
“Evelyn!” She screamed the name with venom, then hurled her phone against the wall, shattering it. Her eyes burned with malice.
She ordered a nurse to buy her a new phone, then checked herself out of the hospital to hunt the three men down.
Arranging a private flight took time. In the meantime, they bombarded Evelyn with calls and messages.
“Evelyn, don’t marry some illegitimate son just to spite us!”
“Evelyn, come back. We can pretend none of this ever happened.”
“Evelyn, stop being childish.”
Far away in Silverpine, Evelyn glanced at the flood of messages and smirked. They must have received the gifts she sent.
“Evelyn, they’ve arrived.” Mrs. Caldwell’s eyes glistened as she beheld Evelyn in full bridal regalia.
“Mom, Dad, I’ll be fine.”
She couldn’t promise them happiness, but she could at least assure them that this time, she wouldn’t repeat the mistakes of her past
life.
Her parents understood the unspoken meaning behind her words. In their world, personal desires often came second to duty.
They could only pray their daughter would find happiness, as they had. “Evelyn, we’ll always be your strongest support.”
Touched, Evelyn smiled warmly at them. Then, she blocked all three men’s numbers and set her phone aside.
Clutching her lace–trimmed bouquet in the church vestry, Evelyn ignored the muffled chatter of bridesmaids outside. The groom waiting at the altar–unlike those other men–had never fallen for Daphne’s games.
When their calls went straight to voicemail, the message was clear: She’d blocked them all.

Frustrated, the men could only bark at their assistants to hurry the flight plans.
Meanwhile, Liam adjusted his tie at the altar, his pulse erratic. After years of longing, she would finally walk down that aisle toward
him.
He had never dreamed he would have the chance to marry her.
He didn’t know why she had abandoned her childhood sweethearts to choose him–some blessings one just accepted as God’s will.
But whatever the reason, the outcome was in his favor.
With a flurry of crisp hundred–dollar bills, he finally convinced the groomsmen to unlock the bridal suite door.
The sight of Evelyn, serene and radiant in her wedding attire, stole his breath away.
Trying to maintain his composure, Liam stepped forward.
Evelyn looked up as he approached.
Their eyes met–and for a moment, both froze.
Liam was stunned by her beauty.
Evelyn was stunned by the emotion in his gaze.
Wasn’t this just a marriage of convenience?
Why did he look like a man who had just been granted his greatest wish?
If she hadn’t been certain she’d never met him before, she might have wondered if they had some forgotten history.
