Chapter 14
After dinner, Evelyn glanced at the gloomy sky outside while listening to the butler inform Liam about the three men still standing stubbornly at the gates.
“Just ignore them,” Evelyn said, her eyes shifting to Liam. “And don’t go out of your way to update me on their situation. You know my history with them. The fact that I married you means I’ve left the past behind.”
Liam wasn’t the least bit embarrassed at being seen through.
“Now, let’s talk about why you acted like you’ve known me for a long time.”
At her words, Liam’s smile faltered slightly.
How could he tell his wife that he had fallen in love with her at first sight–from a student ID photo he’d found in school?
And that later, after witnessing her kindness toward victims of bullying, he had been completely smitten?
After a moment’s hesitation, Liam decided honesty was the best policy.
“I went to the same high school as you…‘
“Why don’t I remember you?”
“Back then, I hadn’t been acknowledged by the Sinclair Family yet. After I was recognized, I left.”
“No wonder.”
BOOM!
A sudden clap of thunder startled them both. Outside, rain began pouring down in sheets.
Unfazed, they continued talking, eager to learn more about each other.
Meanwhile, the three men in the rain seemed to have been forgotten.
They stood stubbornly in the downpour, letting the icy water drench them.
The rain was heavy, but it couldn’t wash away the pain in their hearts.
“I thought I loved Daphne… So why does it hurt so much that Evelyn married someone else?” Nathaniel murmured.
The other two had no answer.
Seeing their silence, he whispered again, “Do you think… Evelyn will ever forgive us?”
“She will,” Julian said hoarsely. “Evelyn has always been soft–hearted toward us. If she sees us standing here in the rain, she’ll come
out.”
“Right. She could never bear to see us suffer,” Sebastian agreed weakly.
Clutching at this desperate hope, they remained in the rain–until Sebastian’s body finally gave out, collapsing onto the soaked ground.
The other two tried to help him up, only to collapse as well.
When Daphne arrived at the Sinclair Family’s estate in Silverpine, she found all three of them unconscious in the rain.
Panicked, she called an ambulance.
“This patient recently donated a kidney and hasn’t fully recovered. The severe rain exposure has caused a high fever.”
“These two lost significant amounts of blood before and haven’t regained their strength. The rain has triggered dangerous fevers.”

In the hospital, Daphne struggled to care for all three men alone.
She wiped their brows anxiously and monitored their IV drips, exhausted but determined.
Nathaniel and Julian were the first to wake. Seeing themselves in the hospital, they immediately assumed Evelyn had brought them there.
Even in their weakened states, the thought comforted them.
When footsteps approached the door, both perked up, eyes fixed expectantly on the entrance.
“Ev-
–
”
But the name died on their lips as Daphne walked in.
Their faces fell.
“Julian! Nathaniel! You’re awake!” Daphne rushed to them, relief flooding her voice. “I was so worried-”
She reached out to touch Julian’s forehead, but he instinctively pulled back.
“You…” Daphne’s eyes instantly welled up with tears.
“I’m fine,” Julian said stiffly. “Go check on Nathaniel.”
For some reason, he didn’t want her touching him.
“I’m fine too,” Nathaniel added, avoiding her pleading gaze. “Sebastian needs you more.”
“You’re both being horrible!” Daphne turned away, waiting for them to comfort her.
But after a long silence, no one spoke.
Confused, she glanced back–only to find both men staring blankly at the ceiling, lost in thought, completely indifferent to her distress.
Just as she was about to speak, Sebastian stirred awake.
“Sebastian! You’re finally awake! You have no idea how they-”
But Sebastian, still groggy, was immediately irritated by her shrill voice. “Shut up!”
Daphne froze.
What was happening? Why were all three of them treating her like this?
Sebastian looked at her tear–streaked face and felt only annoyance–none of the tenderness he once had.
