Chapter 15
Standing outside the Sinclair Estate yesterday had made one thing painfully clear to them—they loved Evelyn. That was why they couldn’t accept her marrying someone else.
What they felt for Daphne was nothing more than pity, born from her exaggerated fragility.
If they wanted to win Evelyn back, Daphne had to go.
Daphne studied their pensive expressions, a growing unease twisting in her gut. She didn’t know how to stop this, so she fell back on
her usual tactic: playing the victim.
“After everything I’ve done for you-” Her voice trembled as tears spilled over. “I ignored my own health to care for you, and this is how you treat me the moment you wake up?”
Sebastian, Julian, and Nathaniel watched her theatrics and couldn’t help but compare her to Evelyn. Evelyn would never seek praise for
every little deed. She’d just quietly take care of things, putting their needs above her own.
Still, Daphne had nursed them. That deserved some acknowledgment.
“You’ve worked hard. I’ll transfer some money–buy whatever you need.”
“I’ll arrange an easy job for you. It’s time you moved on.”
“I’ll find you an apartment. The villa–you and your father should vacate it.”
Daphne’s tears froze mid–track. “…Are you cutting ties with me?”
“Evelyn is still angry with us. Your absence would help,” Sebastian said flatly.
“But she’s married now! You’re free! Why are you-”
“Who said we wanted to be free?”
“You don’t even love her!”
“Enough!” Julian’s shout cracked like a whip. “Our feelings are none of your concern.”
Three pairs of icy eyes pinned her in place. Daphne hadn’t been on the receiving end of that look since before she’d sunk her claws into them. It transported her back to her early days at the Caldwell Family, when they’d regarded her with nothing but detached politeness.
All those years of carefully driving wedges between them and Evelyn, of positioning herself as the better woman–undone in an instant.
The injustice of it choked her.
“She’s married!” Daphne’s voice spiraled into hysteria. “You ruined her birthday for me! You rejected the alliance! This was days ago— have you forgotten?!”
A muscle twitched in Nathaniel’s jaw. “Evelyn never cared about you,” she raged on. “If she did, she wouldn’t have left you in that storm, wouldn’t have ignored you collapsing-”
“SHUT UP!” The simultaneous roar made Daphne flinch. Their lingering pity evaporated.
“Did Evelyn poison you against me?” Her composure shattered entirely. “That bitch couldn’t even let me have this after stealing everything else-”
The venom in her voice, the naked hatred–this was the real Daphne, stripped of her meek facade.
“One more word,” Sebastian said softly, “and I promise you’ll regret it.”
The threat snapped her back to reality. These weren’t just the indulgent men who’d spoiled her–they were heirs to four of the most powerful families. She’d seen firsthand how they’d destroyed someone who crossed her, reducing the person to a broken shell.
Daphne’s spine turned to ice. Forcing a shaky laugh, she backtracked hastily. “Y–you’re not thinking clearly post–fever. I’ll… fetch the doctor.”
She fled.
Outside, her face contorted with rage. “Evelyn…” she hissed, nails biting into her palms. “Why won’t you just die?!”
A passing nurse startled at her expression. Daphne smoothed her features instantly, heading to the cafeteria. Her luxurious life depended on staying in their good graces.
Having tasted elite society, she’d rather die than return to mediocrity.
Those privileges were hers. She wouldn’t let go.
