Chapter 17

The scene before them pierced their hearts like a knife.

It was hard to breathe.

Once upon a time, all of this had been theirs.

But now…

The restaurant had mostly emptied out. The three men walked over with heavy steps, their expressions grim.

Evelyn and Liam, absorbed in their meal, didn’t notice them at first, assuming they were just passing waiters. It wasn’t until the figures lingered too long that they finally looked up.

The moment Evelyn saw them, her smile vanished. “What are you doing here again? Didn’t we make things clear last time?”

Sebastian, Julian, and Nathaniel flinched at her coldness.

“Evelyn, we came to see you. We need to talk–just for a bit. Please.” Sebastian spoke carefully, as if treading on thin ice.

“What could you possibly have to say to my wife?” Liam cut in, protective.

Even though Evelyn had assured him she held no lingering feelings for them, he wasn’t about to let her be alone with men who’d known

her since childhood–especially not when she had such a soft heart.

“Evelyn.” Ignoring Liam completely, the three kept their eyes locked on her, pleading.

Wanting to end their harassment once and for all, Evelyn agreed.

She pressed a reassuring kiss to Liam’s lips before he left, then turned an icy gaze to the three men standing before her.

“Sit. Talk”

The stark contrast in how she treated Liam versus them twisted like a knife in their chests.

Outside the restaurant, Liam kicked a pebble absently, bored.

Then a woman in a white dress approached–plain–faced, with dull, teary eyes.

Thinking he was in her way, Liam stepped aside.

Daphne’s pitiful expression stiffened at his movement, but she quickly adjusted. “You’re Evelyn’s husband, right?”

Liam eyed her, silent.

“I’m the butler’s daughter. There’s been… a misunderstanding between me and Mrs. Sinclair.” She dabbed at fake tears. “She’s always loved the young heirs of the Harrington, Montgomery, and Whitmore families, but they… well, they’ve always treated me differently. So

she resents me.”

She sniffled dramatically. “I just want to apologize. I don’t want her to rush into marriage out of spite and regret it later. After all, she

loves those three so much-”

Before she could spin more lies, Liam cut her off with a disgusted scoff. “Wow. Even for an angelic bitch, this act is transparent.”

Daphne’s mouth snapped shut. “I–I’m just trying to save you from heartbreak! How can you be so ungrateful?”

“The ‘three young heirs‘ you’re whining about are the same losers harassing my wife right now, aren’t they?” Liam smirked. “Funny. If they treat you so ‘special,‘ why do you look like a starved alley cat? Meanwhile, my wife’s been glowing since the day we married.

You’re not even fit to lick her shoes.”

He only entertained this nonsense because he wanted her to storm in and ruin whatever conversation was happening inside.

Daphne’s face twisted. “Fine! Be blind if you want!” She spun on her heel, muttering curses under her breath.

Damn Evelyn. How did she keep winning? First three elite families, now this man…

Unbeknownst to her, the restaurant’s glass walls reflected her venomous expression perfectly.

Liam’s voice slithered after her, cold as steel. “Hey, two–faced bitch. Let me catch you badmouthing my wife, and you’ll learn exactly what happens to people who piss me off.”

Daphne froze.

Then she saw it–her own ugly sneer, clear in the glass.

Head down, she hurried inside.

And there they were–Sebastian, Julian, and Nathaniel, pouring their hearts out to Evelyn.

“Evelyn, I love you.”
