Chapter 19

Stunned by Evelyn’s harsh words, the three men stood frozen in place, staring blankly at the scattered pearls, the shattered gem fragments at their feet, and the torn photographs littering the ground.

No one spoke. Evelyn had refused to go back with them, calling them bad luck–meeting them had been nothing but misfortune.

Her words had been like a sharp knife plunged into their hearts, twisting relentlessly until their insides were a mangled, bloody mess.

Each of them was drowning in agony.

None of them moved. They simply stood there, heads bowed in silence, tears streaming down their faces.

Drop by drop, their tears fell to the floor, pooling into small puddles.

No one knew how much time had passed before Sebastian finally lifted his head, wiping the tears from the corners of his eyes. His voice

was heavy as he spoke. “Evelyn, I won’t give up. I’ll do whatever it takes to earn your forgiveness.”

Julian, as if spurred on by his words, quickly added, “I don’t believe all those years we spent together can be forgotten so easily.”

Nathaniel followed suit. “Evelyn’s just too hurt right now. That’s why she said those things. You can’t expect to win someone over with just one attempt.‘

Though they spoke with conviction, their hearts were filled with doubt.

Would not giving up even matter?

Could it really be forgotten so quickly?

Was it really just pain talking?

Finally, they stirred, stretching their stiff, numb legs after standing for so long, and left the restaurant together.

They didn’t even notice Daphne standing nearby.

Ignored, Daphne watched their retreating figures, fury burning in her chest.

She remembered how they had first taken notice of her–back when she had “saved” them from a group of thugs.

Never mind that those thugs had been hired by her.

But the result had been good, hadn’t it?

They had accepted her. Her life at school had improved, and even her standing in the Caldwell Family had risen. Her father had even

gotten a raise because of it.

She had learned early in life—if one wanted something, one had to fight for it, no matter the means.

Pulling out her phone, she sent a text.

Then she laughed, the sound bordering on hysterical.

Meanwhile, Evelyn had just stepped out of the restaurant when she spotted Liam, his entire demeanor radiating displeasure as he glared at her.

She quickened her pace, throwing herself into his arms with a delighted grin.

Liam’s anger melted away the moment she launched herself at him.

Still, he deliberately kept his voice cool. “Oh, so you do remember your husband waiting miserably outside for you? I was starting to think you’d forgotten about me, taking so long to chat.”

Evelyn, fully aware that Liam would never stay mad at her, was more than happy to indulge him. “Darling, let’s go home.”

She tilted her head up, widening her eyes in an irresistibly pitiful look.

Liam, who usually had no principles when it came to her, instantly melted under her coquettish assault.

Though it left him feeling a bit bitter, he could already imagine turning this to his advantage tonight.

Unaware of his scheming, Evelyn happily looped her arm through his and skipped toward the car.

It wasn’t until after dinner, when Liam had her pinned beneath him, rocking into her relentlessly, that Evelyn realized just how petty this man could be.

He acted all magnanimous, but look at him now–driving her to ruin just because she’d talked to them for a bit!

By the time she finally passed out from exhaustion, her last hazy thought was a vow to never provoke a petty man again. This was terrifying.

She probably wouldn’t be able to walk tomorrow.

Sure enough, the next day, Evelyn’s legs were jelly. She spent the entire day in bed while Liam reverted to his usual “doting husband” act–apologetic, but utterly unrepentant.

He massaged her shoulders, fed Ker meals, and doted on her in every way–except for one.

He refused to promise any restraint in bed.

she didn’t know what other men were like, but she really couldn’t handle this one.
