Chapter 20
Daphne followed the three men back to the hospital.
Watching them return to their sickbeds, she put on a bright smile and approached the ward.
“Sebastian, Julian, Nathaniel–I brought you dinner. I hope you like it.” Her cheerful tone elicited no reaction from them.
For a brief moment, Daphne stiffened, but she quickly masked it. Even without acknowledgment, she continued setting out the meal with practiced ease.
Once everything was arranged, she coaxed each of them to eat. Because they hadn’t touched food all day, they eventually gave in and
sat down.
Daphne flitted around them like a maid, serving dishes attentively.
As they ate, the three men couldn’t help but think: If only this were Evelyn.
When the meal ended and Daphne finished cleaning up, they finally spoke. “You’ve taken care of us these past few days. What do you want in return?”
“Name anything.”
“We’ll make it happen.”
Daphne’s heart twisted with resentment. So, they were determined to cut ties with her, were they? Fine. If that was how they wanted to play, she wouldn’t hold back.
Her face, however, remained the picture of fragile sorrow. Tears welled in her eyes as she gazed at them. “Is this how you see me? That I only cared for you because I wanted something?”
The three simply watched her, unmoved. The tears that once swayed them now meant nothing.
Wiping her cheeks, she forced a brave smile. “I understand… I don’t want anything. But tomorrow–could you accompany me one last time? Just for a walk around the city?”
She clutched her chest as if heartbroken, pausing before lifting her head again. “Let’s call it… a proper goodbye. Please?”
Nathaniel softened. “…Alright.”
Sebastian and Julian hesitated but, seeing Nathaniel agree, exchanged a glance and nodded.
The next day, the sun shone brightly–perfect for an outing.
Daphne wore a pristine white dress and a wide–brimmed straw hat, her makeup flawless, every strand of hair meticulously styled.
The three men, in contrast, had thrown on casual clothes without a second thought.
Daphne’s lips thinned at their indifference, but she swallowed her irritation. What mattered was what came next.
The four set out.
The streets echoed with Daphne’s forced chatter, Nathaniel occasionally humoring her, while Sebastian and Julian remained silent.
No matter how hard she tried to lighten the mood, their detachment never wavered. Eventually, even she fell quiet.
Memories of their past outings–laughing, carefree–clashed violently with the cold reality. Daphne’s mask nearly slipped, her expression flickering with something ugly. But the men, lost in their thoughts, noticed nothing.
When they reached their destination, Daphne subtly guided them toward a busy intersection.
Her eyes darted until she spotted a familiar license plate. Then, sweetly, “Sebastian, Julian, Nathaniel–there’s a famous restaurant up ahead. Let me treat you to one last meal, as thanks for everything you’ve done for me.”
“Mm.” Eager to end this farce, they agreed.

Daphne walked ahead, ensuring they didn’t notice the traffic light change.
Then-
She whirled around, eyes wide. “LOOK OUT!”
A deafening CRASH.
Daphne shoved the three aside–just as a car slammed into her, sending her body flying.
The men, sprawled on the ground, initially scowled at her sudden push–until they saw her crumpled form in a pool of blood.
“DAPHNE!” Sebastian scrambled for his phone, calling an ambulance. Julian and Nathaniel rushed to her side, lifting her gently.
“Daphne, can you hear me?”
“Daphne-!”
Internally, Daphne cursed the driver’s terrible timing. But hearing them cry her name again, she knew her plan had worked.
With a weak, angelic smile, she whispered: “As long… as you’re… safe…”
Then let her eyes flutter shut, feigning unconsciousness.
