Chapter 5

Evelyn looked up at the sound of their voices and, seeing them about to open the box, swiftly snatched it back.

Her sharp reaction stunned the three men, their gazes locking onto her.

“Who did you choose? Julian? Nathaniel? Or…” Sebastian trailed off before he could say “me.”

Evelyn knew why–he was afraid. Afraid she had actually chosen him.

She forced a smile and met their eyes calmly. “What if I’ve decided? What if I haven’t? There’s no need for you to be so tense–it has nothing to do with you anyway.”

Julian suddenly grabbed her wrist, his voice urgent. “What do you mean, nothing to do with us? If you’re marrying into one of our families, it can only be one of us! The Montgomery, Harrington, and Whitmore families don’t have any other suitable candidates!”

Nathaniel stepped closer, his eyes fixed on her. “We know you’ve been struggling to make a decision, and we never pushed you. But if there’s an answer now, just tell us. We want this torment to end.”

So, even the mere possibility of marrying someone they didn’t love was torment to them?

She took a deep breath, opened the box, and pulled out the dazzling diamond necklace sent by the Sinclair family, holding it up for them to see. “This is my answer. Satisfied?”

Not the imperial jade bracelet from the Montgomerys. Not the 20–carat ring from the Harringtons. Not the ancestral jade pendant from the Whitmores.

Only then did the three notice the car full of shopping bags and realize what had happened. “It’s not a token from any of our families, but a new necklace you bought today? How much did it cost? We’ll cover it–consider it an apology.”

Evelyn stared at the glittering diamonds in her hand, silent.

Sebastian, assuming she loved the necklace, took it and fastened it around her neck for her.

Julian gave an approving thumbs–up, complimenting how well it suited her complexion.

Nathaniel snapped a few photos with his phone, saying he wanted to keep them as mementos.

For the first time since she came back, Evelyn saw genuine smiles on their faces.

And the reason for their joy? They thought she hadn’t chosen a fiancé yet so they were relieved.

For a moment, Evelyn found it all absurd. Ridiculous, even.

She wanted to say something, but before she could speak, Daphne suddenly appeared, interrupting them.

Her eyes lit up at the sight of the gifts piled high in the living room. “Why are there so many presents all of a sudden? Are… are they for Miss Caldwell?”

The moment the three men saw Daphne, their attention snapped to her, unmoving.

Watching their irrepressible smiles, Evelyn spoke flatly. “They were for me. But I don’t like them. Take them if you want.”

With that, she turned and walked to her bedroom, ignoring them.

Daphne’s eyes widened in disbelief. She pointed at herself hesitantly. “M–me? Take them? Miss Caldwell, you can’t be serious. How could I possibly deserve gifts meant for you from these young heirs?”

Hearing the dejection in her voice, the three men’s hearts ached. They immediately ushered her toward the mountain of presents.

“If Evelyn said they’re yours, then they’re yours. These dresses, bags, and jewelry are all the latest releases. They’ll look just as beautiful on you–why wouldn’t you deserve them?”

“Things only have value when they’re used. Daphne, don’t sell yourself short. You deserve the best in this world.”

“Go ahead and open them. We’ll help you pick out what suits you…”

Their coaxing voices faded as Evelyn’s door shut behind her, leaving only silence.

The cold weight around her neck felt unfamiliar.

But she thought–given enough time, she would get used to it.

Eventually.
