Chapter 6

When Evelyn woke up, her head was spinning as if she had a fever.

Somehow, Sebastian, Julian, and Nathaniel had already gotten wind of her condition and rushed over.

She was sick for three days, and they came to visit every single one of them–they might as well have moved into the Caldwell Family estate. Yet, the time they actually spent with her was negligible.

Most of the time, they were downstairs with Daphne, teaching her chess and piano, accompanying her to the garden to prune flowers and water plants, taking photos of her, sketching her…

Evelyn saw it all but chose not to call them out on it.

Occasionally, they would come upstairs to check on her–only to notice that many things had disappeared from her room.

“Evelyn, where’s that pearl doll I gave you a few years ago? Why is it gone?”

“You used to love the gemstone crown I gave you always kept it in the most prominent spot. Why isn’t it there anymore?”

“And the group photo we took when we were eighteen? Where did you hide it?”

Faced with their questions, Evelyn brushed them off with vague excuses.

Though puzzled, they didn’t press further.

By the time her birthday arrived, she had mostly recovered.

Before the party, Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell came to fetch her and gave her a quick reminder. “All the important figures in our circle will be attending tonight–the Harringtons, the Montgomerys, and the Whitmores will surely come to celebrate your birthday. Your father and I think today would be the perfect time to announce the engagement. What do you think?”

Evelyn was about to nod when the sound of shattering glass cut through the air.

She turned to see Daphne standing frozen, her face deathly pale. “Miss… you’re getting married?”

Evelyn gave a slight nod without explanation.

Soon enough, everyone would know anyway.

At seven in the evening, the birthday party began on schedule. The grand hall was packed, buzzing with excitement.

The moment Sebastian, Julian, and Nathaniel walked in together–all dressed in tailored suits–the entire room turned to stare.

“I’m so jealous of Miss Caldwell! Three gorgeous childhood friends, and she gets to pick one to marry? When will I ever be that lucky?”

“What’s the point of envy? This was an arranged marriage agreed upon ages ago. No matter who she chooses, it’ll be a perfect match in status and compatibility!”

“Hasn’t Miss Caldwell come of age? Do you think she’ll announce the engagement tonight? I’m dying to know who she’ll pick!”

Evelyn listened to the chatter calmly, her expression unreadable.

But the three men who overheard the same comments grew uneasy, quickly closing in around her.

“Evelyn, are you really announcing the engagement today? Why didn’t you tell us beforehand?”

“It’s my private matter. Why should I inform you?”

Her indifferent reply only fueled their frustration.

“How is this not our business? Unless –” Nathaniel’s voice turned sharp. “Are you saying the groom will be someone else? Stop playing games and just tell us who did you choose?”

Before she could answer, Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell stepped onto the stage, smiling graciously at the guests before raising the microphone.

“Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to celebrate our daughter Evelyn’s birthday tonight. On behalf of the Caldwell Family, we extend our deepest gratitude. Aside from this joyous occasion, we also have another happy announcement to make –the chosen partner for Evelyn’s arranged marriage.”

The hall erupted in cheers and applause.

The most excited were the elders of the Whitmore, Montgomery, and Harrington families, who immediately gestured for Nathaniel, Julian, and Sebastian to join them.

At the sight, the three men’s faces darkened, their hearts pounding violently.

But they knew decorum demanded restraint. Forcing smiles, they reluctantly returned to their families.

Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell then gave Evelyn a meaningful glance. Understanding, she lifted the hem of her dress and walked gracefully to her parents‘ side.

Just as she took her place, a sharp crackle of static pierced the air.

Evelyn turned along with the rest of the guests–only to see a familiar face projected onto the large screen.

It was Daphne, weeping hysterically.
