Chapter 8

With just a few words, the room plunged into dead silence once again.

Evelyn didn’t care about their reactions. She simply helped her parents out of the hall.

The car ride home was so quiet one could hear a pin drop. It wasn’t until they were nearly home that her parents finally let out a heavy sigh, looking at their daughter with heartache. “Evelyn… did you insist on canceling the engagement and marrying into the Sinclair Family because you knew they loved Daphne?”

“Yes. Forced affection is never sweet. Liam and I may not have deep feelings for each other, but he’s devoted to his career–he would never cheat. We may not grow old in love, but mutual respect is enough for me.”

Her parents were taken aback by her certainty. “You trust Liam that much?”

Evelyn nodded softly, comforting them. “Yes. Because I’ve looked into him.”

But the real reason–the one she kept buried in her heart–was something she couldn’t share.

In her past life, Liam had never married. No scandals, no affairs. Until his death, he remained the feared and unapproachable titan of commerce, his reputation as icy as his demeanor.

That was why she was certain–this choice would not be a mistake.

After the disastrous birthday party, Evelyn returned home and began packing in earnest.

The wedding would be held in Silverpine. The day before, the Sinclair Family sent private jets to deliver the betrothal gifts and escort

the bride.

Just as Evelyn finished checking her luggage and dowry, a message arrived.

It was from Sebastian–an address, asking her to meet. They wanted to talk.

She checked the time. There were still four or five hours before her flight. So she agreed.

When she pushed open the door to the private room, three pairs of gloomy eyes locked onto her.

Silence stretched between them.

Ten minutes later, Sebastian finally took a sip of wine and spoke in a low voice. “Evelyn, we’re sorry about yesterday. But a life was at stake. We couldn’t just watch Daphne die. We had no choice but to let you down.”

“You’ve let me down before. I don’t need your apologies.” Her icy tone only deepened their discomfort. Julian and Nathaniel grew impatient. “What’s done is done. Getting angry won’t change anything. The elders are furious, but Daphne is innocent. She shouldn’t suffer for this. You’ve always been their favorite–if you just sweet–talk them, they’ll calm down.”

“If you can convince them not to target Daphne… whichever of us you choose, we’ll cherish you. Love you for the rest of your life. Okay?”

So even now, they only sought her out to protect Daphne.

Exhaustion washed over her. “There’s no need. After you left yesterday, I already announced-”

Sebastian cut her off. “Announced what? Who did you choose?”

Her gaze drifted between them. In the end, she didn’t answer directly. “The betrothal tokens your families gave me… I’ve sent them

back. You’ll receive them tomorrow.”

For a moment, they thought she had only returned two–that she had chosen one of them after all. They were about to press for answers when the hospital called. “Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Harrington, Mr. Whitmore–Miss Holloway is awake and trying to go to the rooftop again!”

Their faces paled. They grabbed their coats and stood to leave.

For the first–and last–time, Evelyn stopped them. “Before you go… could you say ‘Happy Wedding‘ to me? Just once?”

Something about her request sent an inexplicable pang through their chests.

They opened their mouths–to ask why, to question her–but after exchanging glances, the words slipped out in unison. “Happy Wedding.”

The moment the words left their lips, the hospital called again.

Without another word, they left.

Evelyn didn’t try to stop them. She watched their car disappear into the distance, then returned home.

Deleted their numbers.

Picked up her luggage.

And boarded the Sinclair Family’s helicopter.

This time, she had chosen none of them.

This time, she was choosing herself-

And the life that awaited her.
